With 4 Lower school students, lemons were zested, sugar was measured and eggs were cracked. Flour found its way everywhere. Aprons were tested. Behold! Lemon Poppy Seed muffins rose in the oven to create a mouth-watering mid-morning snack.

Our ASH Bakers gathered at the Shannon House Community with their parents last Saturday morning to try their hands at being “sous chefs”. Donning embroidered aprons and chef hats, the young chefs mixed and measured until the recipe was completed. Together, we learned  about “everyday math” while converting measurements of ingredients and calculating the amount time needed for the baking. But, don’t let you think that it was not a lot of fun. Smiles were in evidence the whole time; particularly when we ate the delicious treats.

This precious experience reminded me of the many times on Saturday mornings when, at the age of these children, I learned through the patient tutelage of my Dad the fine arts of French cuisine. It is a true gift of God to see children learning the culinary arts, enjoying the magical art of baking, and it was a simple  joy to share all of this time with them!
